Celebrating 25 Years of the Art Jaramillo Summer Law Clerk Program January 18, 2017

On January 14, 2017, the New Mexico State Bar’s Committee on Diversity in the Legal Profession hosted a New Year’s Brunch to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Art Jaramillo Summer Law Clerk Program [http://www.nmbar.org/Nmstatebar/About_Us/Diversity/Summer_Law_Clerk_Program.aspx]. The event brought together students and employers who have participated in the program to celebrate its many successes, including receiving the 2016 ABA Partnership Award in August.  The event also recognized Art Jaramillo’s leadership in establishing this program that has meant so much to so many current and future lawyers.

Mr. Jaramillo presented to the group about the program’s history. He was inspiring as he shared his own personal path from his humble beginnings in rural New Mexico and first being encouraged to attend law school by his mother, to graduating magna cum laude from the University of Santa Clara School of Law, to his efforts as an attorney to develop a program that would provide mentoring and clerkship opportunities to students at University of New Mexico School of Law.  Current and past students who had participated in the program were asked to rise and be recognized, and many of those who stood were also lawyers who were now proudly participating in the program as employers.

The event was the perfect opportunity to recognize all who have worked to make this program such a success, and to continue the legacy of Art Jaramillo through their support of the program.  In attendance were Cuddy & McCarthy’s Associate Laura E. Sanchez-Rivét, Partner Art Jaramillo, and Partner Charles V. Garcia.
