Biography

Jim Rubin joined Cuddy & McCarthy, LLP in 2013 after practicing law for twenty-seven years as a co-founder and shareholder in Rubin Katz Law Firm, P.C. in Santa Fe. He is a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University (B.S.B.A.) and the University of Illinois College of Law.

Jim has an extensive practice in all aspects of real estate, zoning and land use, public/private partnerships, construction and business law. His wills, trusts and estates practice includes wealth preservation and planning for family-owned and privately-held businesses. Jim no longer first chairs litigation but provides strategic support to our commercial litigators.  Understanding his clients’ needs is paramount; with that knowledge Jim’s negotiating skills and preparation of well-drafted documents are most effective.

As the entertainment industry has grown in New Mexico, Jim’s business practice expanded into entertainment law including drafting television network contracts, content and branded entertainment agreements, music and other intellectual property rights agreements. He has enjoyed the opportunity to negotiate with companies such as ESPN, NBC-Universal, CBS, Disney, 7th Floor Productions and Fox. Since 2007, Jim has also worked on all aspects of the Santa Fe Studios project that opened in fall 2011.

Over the last twenty years, Jim has taught numerous continuing legal education courses on topics such as drafting purchase agreements, land title, survey and title insurance review, and business transactions law. Jim also served for several years as Chair of the New Mexico State Bar’s Real Estate Specialty Committee.

Jim was president and a director of Rainbow House, an international adoption agency serving families in New Mexico and Colorado for over twenty years. He also coached youth soccer for thirteen years as well as track at St. Michael’s High School. Jim has again been recognized in 2017 by his peers for The Best Lawyers in America®  and Southwest Super Lawyers®, and is a Martindale-Hubbell “AV” Preeminent™ attorney, its highest qualification level.
