Biography

Rip Harwood joined Cuddy & McCarthy, LLP in 2019 as “of Counsel” in the Albuquerque office, where he maintains a state-wide litigation practice serving clients in federal, state, and Tribal courts.  He has broad, cross-disciplinary experience in complex civil litigation matters, including in the areas of insurance defense, personal injury defense, insurance coverage and insurance bad faith, governmental entity defense, Indian law, environmental law, wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases, professional negligence, and employment discrimination matters. Mr. Harwood has tried over thirty state and federal court cases and defended the results in the appellate courts.  He regularly defends New Mexico state agencies against claims for damages brought under New Mexico’s Tort Claims Act.

Mr. Harwood also has extensive experience before state administrative agencies and as a hearing officer presiding over permitting and licensure matters.  Mr. Harwood presided over the WIPP reauthorization hearings held at statewide locations in 2006. He is regularly contracted to various state and municipal agencies to serve as a hearing officer.

Mr. Harwood adopted the Land of Enchantment as home in 1980 and has since put down deep roots.  He was awarded his J.D. Degree from University of New Mexico in 1985.  In lieu of law review, he wrote the winning law school writing competition paper in 1984, and earned a free semester’s tuition.  He also holds a B.A. degree in finance from the University of Miami.

Mr. Harwood is a member of the Bar of the United States Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico.  He is admitted to practice before various Tribal courts across the west.  He is a member of the American Bar Association and the New Mexico Defense Lawyers Association.
